Colour & Visual Computing Symposium 13th edition

Workshop: Image Quality Analysis according to ISO 12964-1:2021
Instructor: Volker Jansen, Technical Director, Zeutschel GmbH

This workshop is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the image quality definitions described in ISO 19264-1:2021, Photography — Archiving Systems — Imaging Systems Quality Analysis — Part 1: Reflective Originals, and provides an overview of the forthcoming Part 2 on transmissive originals. Participants will explore what the different image quality parameters mean, why they are important in practical cultural heritage digitisation projects, and how technical guidelines such as FADGI and Metamorfoze relate to and differ from the ISO standards.

The session also includes a practical demonstration of image quality analysis using test charts and analysis software. Participants will compare results against the requirements defined by ISO 19264, FADGI, and Metamorfoze, and learn how imaging systems can be optimized to meet these specifications.

The second part of the workshop focuses on the practical setup, calibration, and quality control of digital camera systems for digitisation projects working under ISO, FADGI, or Metamorfoze requirements. Participants will learn practical methods for setting up and calibrating DSLR and other digital cameras, performing image quality assessment and verification, and optimizing imaging systems to consistently achieve the required standards.
